Learn to Curl Clinics

Did you see the sport of Curling on at the recent Olympics and wonder what it is all about? Now you can join in the fun and try it out at one of the Border Curling Club's "Learn to Curl Clinics". To close the curling season the Border Curling Club will offer two clinics:

Tuesday, April 1, 2008
7:00 PM to 9:00 PM

Or
Sunday, April 6, 2008
2:30 PM to 4:30 PM

This is our final LTC clinic for the 2007-2008 season. Our next clinics will be at the start of the 2008-2009 season in the fall. You will learn the basics of throwing the stones, sweeping and generally playing the game.
If you are would like to attend, please send call Garry Coburn at (802) 334-5151 so that we can get an idea of how many people are coming.

DIRECTIONS: The Border Curling Club is located in Stanstead, Quebec, about 6 miles North of Newport.
A Funspiel will run from Thursday, April 10th through Saturday the 12th. Each team will have at least one new curler with four-end play down games and finals of six ends. There will be an end of the season meal held Saturday night April 12th at 7:00 PM. The menu is Tourtierre du Lac St. Jean.

All ages and experience levels welcome. A great aspect of the sport of curling is that almost anyone can learn to play... and it's a great amount of fun!

CLOTHING
• Dress in layers. You'll be standing on ice in a "cold room" for several hours. If you normally wear a hat outside, you'll probably want to wear one here as well.
• Clothing should allow freedom of movement. You need to be able to squat and lunge.
• Lightweight gloves to keep your hands warm while still allowing you to feel the stone.

FOOTWEAR
• Clean shoes. Carry, *DO NOT WEAR*, the shoes in which you intend to curl.
• Athletic shoes are fine, but try to use shoes that you don't wear outside. If you've worn them outside, just make sure you clean them before you curl in them.
• Avoid shoes with Eyelets or metal on top.
• If your feet tend to get cold, consider wearing two pairs of socks.
• The club has slip-on sliders.

Word from the President ! November 2007

Well the season is underway and a large thank you to those members who have stepped up to assist in getting the ice ready and provide the volunteer services necessary to handle the league startups and bonspiels to date. The Opening Funspiel and the Emerson Humphrey have brought both familiar and new faces to our club. For the returning members please take a few minutes and welcome our new curlers to both the club and our game. They are part of our future and we want them to enjoy their experiences with this great game and our club.

The month of November has been devoted to opening our leagues and Junior play.

Turkey Bonspiel- Wednesday Dec 12th to Saturday Dec 15th
This popular 2 event bonspiel returns with a new twist for this season. We are planning for the finals to occur on Saturday the 15th at 5:00 pm with the supper at 6:00 to 7:00. This will be followed by a dance provided by Delta Street. This band is the same group that entertained us for the Canusa last year. Cost for adult curlers are $20 including dinner and dance. $15 per person for dinner and dance only, $10 for juniors and $5 for dance only. We strongly recommend that you bring some friends to the club as this will be a great time. Posters will be up at the club shortly.

Regional Men’s Playdowns- Jan. 4th,5th, and 6th.
Due to the closure of the Asbestos Curling Club the Estrie regional playdowns will be held at our club. Ironically our club was chosen as the majority of the competitive curlers felt we had the best ice in the region. Hats off to our ice crew for a job well done! Initial indications are that there will be possibly three teams with Border curlers on them. If you want to see some good curling and cheer your fellow members on please drop by. We will require volunteers to assist with hosting this event as it will bring in a number of outside curlers to our club.
This event will mean that the Pat Lid Bonspiel will be relocated to later in the season. We will advise when this date has been selected.

President’s Cup- Jan 16th to 20th
This is the premier club event for our season. During last year many participants remarked about how much fun the event was. Poster and information to follow.

Juniors
Wilmer Loewen and his crew of volunteers have started another year for our Junior program. To date we have 33 juniors broken into 2 age groups participating on a combination of technical instruction and games on most Saturday mornings.

The Border Curling club will host 2 events for outside juniors this year. On Saturday February 2 we will have 8 teams competing in a Lite Rock competion. Participants will be under 12 years of age. On Saturday February 16th we will host the Regional playdowns for the Quebec Winter Games. Participants will be under 16 years of age. We will again require volunteers to assist in hosting these events.

Windsor Curling Cub
Our friends at Windsor had a breakdown with their chiller and due to financial hardship were looking at the possibility of closing the club. This club has been an integral part of the estrie curling community and has been a leader in promoting and developing junior curlers. They currently have 50 junior curlers in their club. Daniel Camber had two members of his championship team from the Windsor Curling Club. The Border Curling Club took the initiative at a recent district meeting and proposed a bail out program for the club. At the Border Curling Club Directors Meeting on November 14th after much deliberation and discussion it was unanimously agreed to provide the Windsor Curling Club with a donation of $500. This donation has been matched by contributions from other clubs within the district and we are pleased to advise that the Windsor Curling Club will be reopening.

Supplies
We are again selling curling supplies on behalf of the club. To serve your needs many of the items such as brooms, shoes, pants and grippers are in stock. Other items can be ordered and will arrive within a week. The supplies are located in the display cabinet near sheet 2. Thanks to Bob Alger and Leon Dyer for remodeling the display. At the cabinet there is a folder with the price list and a flyer for other items not on hand. Most curling items can be seen on the website- www. performancebrush.com. We sell at prices below suggested retail and there are no shipping charges.

In closing I would like to say that it has been great to get back on the ice and seeing each of you at the club.

Good Curling!

Kelly Conn - President
